The male was seen repeatedly licking the face of dead dog and keeping a watchful eye on her as he dodged the oncoming traffic. But he never strayed more than a short distance from her side.

Mourning: Witnesses said he only left her side to move out of the way of oncoming traffic

Bereaved: Butcher Xiao Wu, who works on the street, said when the dog was tired he would simply lie down but not leave her side
